Frequently asked questions

Full blackout performance almost always requires either a chemical coating or a separate blackout lining layer — fabric weight alone doesn't determine light blocking. Terra's 430 GSM weight gives it a magnificent room-darkening drape and substantial presence, but we've deliberately chosen not to add chemical coatings in order to keep the fabric free from synthetic treatments. If you need complete darkness, we can add a white blackout lining at checkout — this achieves 100% light blocking while preserving Terra's natural texture on the room-facing side.

Yes — noticeably so in warm conditions. Cotton and linen are natural cellulose fibers that absorb and release moisture, contributing to a breathable, cooling effect. Synthetic fabrics like 100% polyester don't breathe in the same way and can trap heat near the window surface. Rooms with Terra curtains tend to feel slightly more comfortable in summer than equivalent synthetic panels — particularly in south- or west-facing rooms that receive strong afternoon sun.

Terra contains no chemical blackout treatments, no acrylic foam backing, and no formaldehyde finishes — the fabric relies entirely on natural fiber content and weave structure. This makes Terra one of the more straightforwardly clean options for households with young children or pets. As with all new textiles, we recommend airing the panels for 24 hours before hanging in a child's room.

At 430 GSM, Terra benefits from a properly rated rod or track. For panels up to 96" wide, a quality rod rated for around 15 lbs per bracket is typically sufficient. For very wide custom panels — 120" per panel or more — we recommend a heavy-duty rod or ceiling track rated for 25+ lbs. Our IronClad Hardware collection is specifically engineered to support panels at this weight range.

Linen in particular handles humidity well — it's naturally mildew-resistant and was historically the fiber of choice in hot, humid climates for exactly this reason. Cotton performs similarly better in humidity than fully synthetic fabrics that trap moisture. For coastal homes or rooms with higher ambient humidity, Terra is a solid choice. We recommend washing the panels every 2–3 months in high-humidity environments and ensuring good ventilation around the window treatment.
