When you custom-design your dream drapery, one often-overlooked detail is the Stack-back. This is the amount of space your curtains occupy when they are fully drawn open.

What is "Stack-back"?

Stack-back is the width of the curtain fabric when it is gathered or "stacked" at the sides of the window. If your curtain rod is exactly the same width as your window, the stack-back will inevitably cover part of your glass.

Why Stack-back Matters

  1. Natural Light: A proper stack-back allows 100% of sunlight to enter your room.

  2. The Illusion of Space: By extending your curtains beyond the window frame, you make your windows (and your room) look significantly larger and more luxurious.

  3. Fabric Protection: Constant bunching against the window frame can cause uneven wear. Giving the fabric its own space keeps it looking crisp.

Stack-back by Header Style

Different hanging styles require different amounts of "stacking room."

Header Style Stacking Requirement Description
Grommet (打孔款) Minimal (15% - 20%) The leanest stack. Fabric folds neatly around the rod.
Pinch Pleat (捏褶款) Maximum (25% - 30%) Because of the sewn-in pleats and extra fullness, these need more room to "breathe" when open.
Ripple Fold (S波浪) Moderate (20% - 25%) Creates a consistent, architectural stack that is very predictable.
Rod Pocket (穿杆款) Variable Can be very bulky depending on how much you "scrunch" the fabric.

How to Calculate Your Ideal Rod Length

To ensure your curtains clear the glass entirely, follow this simple LoomLuna Formula:

Window Width + (Window Width x 25%) = Recommended Rod Length

Example: If your window is 80 inches wide:

80" + (80" x 25%) = 100 inches.

You should purchase a 100-inch rod and extend it 10 inches past the window on each side.

  • The "Wall-to-Wall" Look: For a high-end hotel feel, consider running your rod from one wall to the other. This eliminates stack-back worries entirely and creates a dramatic, seamless backdrop.

  • Double the Panels: If you have a very large stack-back, consider ordering two panels per side (Split Draw) to balance the visual weight.

  • Hardware Height: Mount your rod 4-6 inches above the window frame to complement the stack-back width, making your ceilings feel taller.
